From our President

At the start of another Brigade year, when we try to encourage our young people towards new challenges and where we possibly could do with a little inspiration ourselves, maybe we could look towards one of the 2013 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala Yousafzai, a remarkably brave young lady whose story should give us all pause for thought!

Malala’s village in the SWAT Valley, in Pakistan, became occupied by the Taliban who began dictating strict policies, especially against girls. They were stopped from attending school and attending the markets. Malala began speaking out for the rights of girls to an education and in 2009, at the age of only 11 she wrote a blog for the BBC under a pseudonym, telling of her life under Taliban rule and promoting the rights of education for girls. She rose in prominence in this cause and due to this she was shot by the Taliban in an assassination attempt in 2012. After having had a miraculous escape from death she was brought back to the UK for recovery and rehabilitation. Since then she has spoken out around the world about her beliefs, despite continuing death threats from the Taliban.

Malala believes passionately in her cause and even though she is still only 16, she is bringing the plight of girls in her home country to the forefront. Little would she, or probably her family, have imagined at what stage her life would be at still so young an age!

So who do we hold in our Companies? A future Prime Minister, a ground breaking scientist, a top class sportsperson, an inspiring teacher, a charismatic preacher! Who knows??

We are there to help guide young people through some of their most formative years and, even if we only keep them for a short period of time, let us hope that we have inspired them to be robust and worthwhile citizens of the future! Maybe only certain things will stick in their minds from their time at BB, so let us hope that it is something that reminds them to strive for that goal they dream of, work towards and ultimately achieve!!.

Let us pray for the young people in our care, that their lives be fruitful, that their time in BB be enjoyable and that they go out and become useful and loving citizens wherever they may end up! Also let us pray for ourselves, for the strength to continue our work in the BB and that we may make a difference and help young people to come to know God. Malala’s story is indeed inspirational but each and every young person has the potential to make an indelible imprint on the people and community around them. The sooner we, as leaders, recognise, embrace and act on this notion, the sooner our young people can develop and make their mark on the Brigade and the world around us!!

I wholeheartedly extend my every best wish for your endeavours in the session ahead and as always do please remain “Sure & Steadfast”.

Jason Frost, District President
